Just south of Sarasota lie the small towns of Osprey and Nokomis, steeped in history and charm. Both towns boast the intracoastal waterway and offer beautiful white sand beaches.
Natural history abounds in Oscar Scherer State Park. Camping, canoeing, swimming. birding, biking, and fifteen miles of nature trails are just a few of the activities you can enjoy. Wildlife viewing offers the opportunity to see several threatened species, including the Florida scrub jay and the gopher tortoise.
Osprey is the area's oldest community. The Historic Site of Spanish Point consists of 30 acres, bordered by mangroves and pine flatwoods, surrounded by Little Sarasota Bay. Before Spanish and Cuban traders used the site commercially, Native Americans occupied the area. Archaeological evidence dates back to 3000 BC. The 19th century brought homesteaders and in 1980 the land was donated to the Gulf Heritage Association for the education and enjoyment of all.
Today Osprey offers many prestigious communities as well as a luxury country club.
Nokomis, named for Hiawatha's grandmother, is located between Sarasota and Venice. It is one of the oldest towns in the area and consists of 22 acres with 1700 feet on the Gulf and 3200 feet along the intracoastal waterway. Nokomis offers something for all tastes, from exquisitely beautiful mansions, to condominiums, to bungalows.
